What is TMS?
Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain. By adjusting magnet strength, pulse frequency, and pulse patterns to influence neuronal activity, TMS can help improve symptoms of depression and other mental health conditions. Treatments are typically performed in a comfortable outpatient setting, do not require anesthesia, and allow patients to resume normal activities immediately afterward. TMS is supported by research as a safe and effective option for patients who have not responded fully to medications or therapy.
Types of TMS
Conventional TMS: A well-established, FDA-cleared treatment that uses repetitive magnetic pulses to stimulate brain circuits involved in mood and cognitive control.
- 20 to 37-minute sessions, 5 days a week for 6 weeks followed by a taper (36 sessions total)
Intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS): A shorter, more efficient form of TMS utilizing patterned forms of stimulation, 50 Hz bursts given at 5 Hz.
- 3-minute sessions, 5 days a week for 6 weeks followed by a taper (36 sessions total)
Accelerated TMS: An accelerated approach involving multiple sessions per day across a shorter time window.
- 9-minute sessions, 10 times per day every 60 minutes, over 5 days (50 sessions total)
One-Day TMS: A highly intensive approach that completes a course of several sessions in the span of a single day. Currently off-label but supported by strong emerging evidence.
- 9-minute sessions, 20 times per day every 30 minutes, over 1 day (40 sessions total)
Protocols vary in length and are customized for individual needs and symptoms. To explore what is right for you, please request a consultation.
